This is how to create a positive learning environment in a hired classroom

If you hire a classroom or are considering hiring a classroom for your langage school, course, tutoring business or art group, and are wondering how to create a positive learning environment in a hired classroom, this blog is for you.

How to create a positive learning environment in a hired classroom

As a course leader or tutor, you’ll want to create a positive learning environment for your students and participants, no matter how frequently or infrequently you hire a classroom; ensuring the room, the tables and chairs are arranged and dressed appropriately to provide a comfortable, pleasant environment for everyone there. This, however, may seem difficult to do in a hired space. However, there are some things you can do to create a positive learning environment that are quick to implement and, of course, temporary –

Round table seating arrangements: arranging your tables and chairs in either 1 large circle or a series of circles will encourage interaction and engagement between students and attendees, therefore helping to encourage open communication and collaboration.

Write a thoughtful or funny message on the whiteboard: writing a thoughtful or funny message on the whiteboard before students and attendees arrive, for them to read and on arrival, is a great way to ‘lighten the mood’ – getting people talking and laughing with one another as soon as they enter your class. Alternatively, you could consider writing a riddle or a question relevant to the topic of the day’s session on the board, and asking those attending to spend the first 5 minutes of the session considering what’s there. The best things about this idea are: 1) your message can support your lesson plan, 2) you can wipe it off as soon as your lesson is over.

Add some colour: adding some colour to a hired classroom can be easier than you might first think – all you need are a couple of colourful and/or relevant posters and some blue tac! Or, if you’re teaching an art class, perhaps display some student art (again, using a non-abrasive and temporary material such as blue tac!). This will help inspire and motivate.

Place centerpieces on each table: depending on what and how you teach, you could place colourful centrepieces on each table – perhaps including helpful words & phrases if you run a language school or including basic art supplies if, for example, you’re an art teacher. Anywhere you can add colour is going to make a difference!
