The Olympics 2024 and children’s sports

With the Olympics 2024 in Paris currently in full swing, we’re looking at its impact on children’s sport.

The Olympics is a huge, worldwide sporting event that occurs every four years and takes place in different cities across the globe. 2012, for example, saw London host The Olympics in Stratford and, this year, The Olympics 2024 is happening right now in Paris, France.

The Olympics showcases the very best athletes throughout the world, competing in their chosen sports, for gold, silver or bronze medals on behalf of their countries.

Olympics 2024 sports include: running, gymnastics, badminton, swimming, football, archery, cycling and rowing, among a huge variety of others.

The Olympics 2024 and children’s sports

We’ve written extensively in the past about the impact of sports on children’s physical and emotional wellbeing, and the importance of participating in sports, but now seems like the perfect time to delve into the impact Olympics can have on children and their enjoyment of sport:

The Olympics showcases and encourages –

Strength & resilience: Olympic athletes have to be both physically and emotionally strong in order to compete; sticking to a set training schedule, learning new skills, and confronting their mistakes in order to master their sport in a controlled and healthy way.

Teamwork & collaboration: many Olympic sports are conducted in teams, such as badminton, rowing, football or tennis, and – as such – can teach children about the importance of teamwork & collaboration in achieving your goals. Working in teams is great for a child’s soft skills, including active listening, problem solving, decision making, honesty and awareness of others.

Self-confidence & pride in what you do: training for an event as renowned as The Olympics takes years of hard work and dedication, and just to qualify in order to compete takes great skill in any chosen sport which is something to be incredibly proud of! The Olympics 2024 shows children that they should be proud of themselves and what they can achieve if they work hard and apply themselves, contributing significantly to self-esteem and confidence.

Health & fitness: events such as this also encourage health & fitness, as well as showcasing a wide variety of healthy bodies, as well as what health can look like for people of all body types. Participation in sports in general encourages children and young people to eat healthy and move their bodies in meaningful, enjoyable and productive ways.

Watching and participating in sports is incredibly important for many aspects of a child’s development; their physical and emotional well-being, sense of self and modelling healthy habits.
